The Dos and Don’ts of Cleaning Granite

Do: Make sure to seal your granite countertops to block any oils or spills from being absorbed. If you notice any liquids being soaked into the granite, we recommend that you re-seal the stone.

Don’t: Harsh cleaners or sponges can weaken the sealant if used frequently. Stay away from acidic cleaners such as lemon, vinegar, or bleach.

Do: Warm water and gentle dish soap is safe to use on granite countertops. We recommend using a simple washcloth or microfiber cloth. Additionally, consider dusting surfaces regularly with a clean cloth.

Don’t: Sliding utensils, pots, and pans on the granite can scratch the surface of the polished stone. Make sure to be careful when placing appliances on your granite countertops.

Do: Wipe up spills immediately, before they are absorbed through the surface.

Don’t: Products that contain abrasives may harm the surface, causing scratches.  Make sure to stay away from scouring creams to prevent any dullness of the granite.

Removing Stains from Granite Countertops

Stains on granite can be removed with a simple, home-made paste. We recommend creating a mixture of acetone and cornstarch. Apply the paste then cover the area with plastic wrap and let it sit until is it completely dry. You may remove the paste then clean the area with acetone. We recommend resealing your countertop once the stain is lightened.
